Nowadays, it's a prerequisite in hip-hop: You blow; you put your
crew on. You've seen it happen time and time again, so it should
come as no surprise that 2003's Cinderella Story / Rookie of the
Year / Top Selling Artist is unveiling his clique. You know his
name: 50 Cent. And if you've been listening, you know his crew:
G-Unit.
"I've been promoting G-Unit since before I even had a record
deal," says 50. "All the music I put out music on the
mixtape circuit was 50 Cent and G-Unit." G-Unit is 50 Cent
flanked by the metaphor-laden rhyme animal Lloyd Banks and aggressive
Southern street soldier Young Buck, and supported by the still-incarcerated
Tony Yayo, who is scheduled to be released at the top of next year
(Free Yayo!). The album is Beg for Mercy. And what separates Beg
For Mercy from your typical supporting crew effort is that it reaches
the high-water marks of its predecessor, Get Rich Or Die Tryin'

50 Centreturns, crew in tow, to dish out more of the same gangsta
shit that brought him huge success in 2003. It's easy to see why
50 was the one chosen to have the solo career from G-Unit. While
as a group they still maintain some of that "the thug everybody
hates to love", most of it is lost somewhere between the
poor flows and overabundance of digitized gunfire and Glock cocks.
I managed to find humor in "My Buddy," an urban version
of the late 80's commercial theme for a doll, updated to be about
their weapons. "Wanna Get to Know You" smoothes things
